Energy Audit

CarbonetiX can provide you with a comprehensive AS/NZS 3598:2000 compliant Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 energy audit.

A Level 1 Energy Audit - sometimes called an overview - allows the overall energy consumption of the site to be evaluated, to determine whether energy use is reasonable or excessive. It provides initial benchmarks of the site so that the effect of energy efficiency measures can be tracked and evaluated. It may be in the form of a desktop study; however the information given to, or gathered by, the auditor needs to be sufficient to enable the overall level of energy efficiency of the site to be determined.

A Level 2 Energy Audit meets the requirements of a Level 1 Audit and also identifies the sources of energy to a site, the amount of energy supplied, and what the energy is used for. It also identifies areas where savings may be made, recommends measures to be taken, and provides a statement of costs, potential savings, and payback periods. A Level 2 Audit is an energy use survey, which is expected to provide a preliminary assessment of costs and savings.

A Level 3 Energy Audit covers the requirements of a Level 1 and Level 2 Audit and provides a detailed analysis of energy usage, the energy savings that can be made, and the cost of achieving those energy savings. It may cover the whole site or may concentrate on an individual item, such as a single industrial process or one of the services. The auditor may employ a specialist to carry out specific parts of an audit or may need to install local metering and logging equipment to monitor energy use. The report from a Level 3 Audit often forms the justification for substantial investment by the owner or an Energy Performance Contract(EPC).

A Walk-Through Energy Audit is a low level energy audit, which identifies energy reduction opportunities for a site with no quantification of potential savings or energy costs. An optional list of unquantified energy saving recommendations can be provided.

Water Audit

A Water Audit identifies the sources of water to a site, the amount of water supplied, and what the water is used for. It also identifies areas where water saving may be made, recommends measures to be taken, and provides a statement of costs, potential savings, and payback periods. A water tariff assessment is undertaken, providing you with the best arrangement with your water provider to minimise associated purchase, disposal and trade waste costs. A Water Audit provides initial benchmarks of the site so that the effect of water minimisation strategies can be tracked and evaluated. The report from a Water Audit often forms the justification for substantial investment by the owner.

A Walk-Through Water Audit is a low level water audit, which identifies water saving opportunities for a site with no quantification of potential water savings or costs. An optional list of unquantified water saving recommendations can be provided.

It provides initial benchmarks of the site so that the effect of waste reduction measures can be tracked and evaluated. The report from a Waste Audit often forms the justification for substantial investment by the owner. Detailed economic analysis with appropriate level of accuracy is provided.

A Walk-Through Waste Audit is a low level waste audit, which identifies ways to reduce waste for a site with no quantification of savings or costs. An optional list of unquantified waste reduction recommendations can be provided.

School NSSP Audit

Get the biggest energy costs and greenhouse gas savings possible from your $50,000 National Solar School Program (NSSP) grant. Our report makes it easy to get quotes and fill in the NSSP paperwork, and is based on our experience in conducting energy audits in over 200 schools.

Spending the whole $50,000 NSSP funding on solar PV will result in saving energy of around just $2,000 a year and 16 tonnes of greenhouse gas.

Spending $15,000 on a 2kW solar PV system (the smallest allowed in the NSSP program) and $35,000 on energy efficiency measures will result in saving energy to the tune of roughly $6,000 a year and 50 tonnes of greenhouse gas.

Carbon Footprint Assessment

Customers, suppliers, stakeholders, Board members, Government, media - everyone's asking! What's my carbon footprint? Do you know the answer?

A Carbon Footprint Assessment is a carbon accounting exercise to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions generated by one or more activities that may be limited to an event, occur at a single or group of facilities, or be a combination of both.

We will work in close consultation with you to establish your organisational and operational boundary for each project. We draw upon our significant expertise within the energy efficiency industry, highlighting carbon reduction opportunities along with improvements to carbon reporting systems. Business goals served by a Carbon Footprint Assessment include:

  • Reporting of mandatory (NGERS) or voluntary carbon emissions
  • Managing risks and planning investments
  • Preparing to participate in carbon markets

Our Carbon Footprint methodology complies with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol - the most widely accepted international standard for carbon reporting - developed by the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and follows the guidelines of the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme guidelines published by the Department of Climate Change.

National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scheme (NGERS)

From the 1 July 2008, businesses must apply for registration with the Greenhouse and Energy Data Officer if they:

  • Are a constitutional corporation and
  • Meet a financial year reporting threshold of either the level of greenhouse gas emissions generated, or the amount of energy consumed or produced

Registered corporations must then report their greenhouse gas emissions and energy use and production for each year in which they meet a threshold. CarbonetiX can provide your organisation with NGERS compliant reporting and guide your business on ways it can minimise future carbon emissions levels.

Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD)

An ESD Assessment encompasses all design aspects of a building in terms of its energy, water and waste efficiency. The scope of the ESD assessment may be limited to one or more of these design aspects. An ESD assessment is typically applied to a refurbishment or new building design and will consider both passive and active design elements.

Passive elements are non-consuming elements of a building and maximise its energy, water or waste efficiency. Key areas of energy passive design include orientation, zoning, thermal mass, glazing, insulation and ventilation. Key areas of passive water design elements include rain water harvesting and or water recycling systems and selection of efficient faucets, showerheads and toilets.

Active elements are energy or water consuming elements that are incorporated in the building design. Key elements include air conditioning systems, lighting systems and pumping requirements.

Mandatory Disclosure Compliance

Building Energy Efficiency Certificate (BEEC)

New Mandatory Disclosure legislation requires owners and tenants of spaces over 2,000 m2 to provide a Building Energy Efficiency Certificate (BEEC) - comprising a NABERS building star rating, lighting inventory and energy efficiency information - when selling or leasing office space. CarbonetiX can provide you with a BEEC and assist with any opportunities that arise from undertaking the certificate process.

The National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) measures and compares the environmental performance of a building or tenancy space against its market and calculates a star rating - 5 stars being the highest rating and representing best practice. Our NABERS Assessor, whilst undertaking a NABERS Rating Assessment, can additionally undertake an energy and or water audit, which will identify energy and or water efficiency opportunities within your building or tenancy to improve your star rating.

A NABERS Rating may be used to:

  • Comply with new Mandatory Disclosure requirements
  • Benchmark against best practice or across property portfolios
  • Market the 'Green' credentials of a building or tenancy space

Cogeneration Or Renewables Assessments

Distributed energy systems - such as Cogeneration and Trigeneration - reduces the grid connected electricity dependency of a site by providing electricity generation onsite. Renewable energy systems are also a distributed energy solution.

A Cogeneration Or Renewables Assessment investigates the opportunities and or pre-feasibility of the technologies under consideration. This would typically involve providing indication of the scale or size of the system, capital implementation cost and future maintenance costs, greenhouse gas emission reduction and energy costs savings. An analysis of historical energy usage, demand and cost data forms part of such a study.

School Heating Review

A heating review is an assessment of a school's heating system. The aim of the review is to:
