Audits – Beacon Lighting

Summary

Beacon Lighting engaged CarbonetiX to undertake energy assessments and install SmartPortal™ real-time energy metering for a sample of its operations across Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.  This included two corporate sites – the Derrimut Distribution Centre and the Mulgrave Support Centre, and 13 retail stores.  The primary objective of the project was to develop a business case to implement energy saving measures in order to reduce running costs and improve environmental performance.

Objectives

  • To reduce the energy consumption and corresponding utility expenditure across all Beacon retail stores across Australia
  • To implement cost-effective and practical energy efficiency measures across select stores
  • To provide a summary of returns and risks associated with recommended measures
  • Better understand energy use and identify trends and anomalies through energy monitoring

Opportunities

A range of opportunities were identified during the energy assessments, including:

  • Flagging air-conditioning replacement of older systems
  • Enabling “free cooling” through economy cycle retrofits
  • Tuning heating and cooling systems in line with a organisational thermal comfort policy
  • Energy efficient lighting upgrades
  • Optimising retail stores’ “lux” levels and load by de-lamping
  • Lighting control improvements
  • Identifying energy waste after hours

"Working with Carbonetix during this process was easy with them taking the lead and guiding us through the various steps. Preparation and execution was well planned and executed and the subsequent report of findings clear and concise." Barry Martens, Chief Operating Officer, Beacon Lighting
